Effective User Experience - 5 Essential Tips

User Experience (UX) design is part of the design process. UX is more focused on the overall experience than just the look of the website or app. User Experience is how a visitor feels when they interact with a website, mobile app or desktop application and is the key to digital product and business success.

Essentials of User Experience

In terms of design, user experience is just as important as visual identity. It doesn’t matter what your site or app looks like, if people don’t know how to interact with it or don’t enjoy the interactions, it’s practically useless. This is where UX comes in. It is important for any digital product or service, and even more important for complex sites or apps because users must be able to easily navigate and understand how to use it. Users who have a great experience with your product or service will undoubtedly come back again and very confidently recommend it to others. Neglecting user experience can lead to product failure and customer dissatisfaction.

1. User Research

Providing the best possible user experience is all about understanding users, regardless of what's being built. Why are they on your site? What are they trying to accomplish? What do they need to accomplish that goal? What do they like or dislike? What are their priorities? All of these questions can help you begin to design the experience.

2. Information Architecture

Information Architecture focuses on organising, structuring and labelling content in an effective and sustainable way. The way you organise content on your site does a number of things. It helps customers find what they’re looking for, it creates clear paths for visitors and enhances the user experience. Creating an effective information architecture comes from understanding the business goal and the requirements of people that will use the website. Beyond usability, information architecture has significant implications for search engines.

3. Sketching and Wireframing

Sketches are a great way to start the design of any complexity. The purpose of sketching is not to identify a solution, but rather to explore as many ideas and alternatives as possible. Wireframes play a crucial role in communicating ideas, goals and design approaches. It also helps create a better user interface design and user experience. Before you start a wireframe you want to have a strong understanding of user's goals, motivations and main tasks they want to achieve when using the site or app.

4. Visual Design

Creating the visual design before considering the steps above won’t be doing your design justice. A great design starts with understanding people and their goals. A successful visual design does not take away from the content on the page or the functions. Instead, it enhances them by engaging users and helps to build trust and interest in the brand.

5. Usability

Usability testing is the process of measuring how well people can use a product. The feedback you get will enable you to determine how well users have performed the tasks as well as when and why they failed. Your evaluation of this feedback will help you determine which parts needs to be refined and tested again. Usability is an imperative part of good user experience design.

Effective user experience design is critical to customer relationships, user adoption and satisfaction. It will provide a great ROI and improve conversion rate substantially. UX design is one of the most important factors to consider in the digital age, don’t get left behind!
