There have been calls for years from users for additional buttons to be added alongside the Facebook 'Like' button as like isn't suitable for all situations.
Last night Facebook globally rolled out a new update allowing users to express themselves quickly - emojis called Reactions.
Your new options are Like, Love, HaHa, Wow Sad and Angry. Noticeably Facebook has managed to keep 4/6 emoji buttons positive and the buttons can only be used on actual posts, not comments just yet.
New buttons have been in the works at Facebook HQ since at least October last year, with the king himself addressing the question of a dislike button at the end of 2014 at a company Q&A. The main issue Zuckerberg implied was that people can be brutal enough as it is on social media - giving them a tool like the dislike button is an easier way for people to spread negativity and with the seemingly never ending rise of bullying and abuse happening online its no wonder he wanted to tread carefully.
It'll be interesting to see how users react to the Facebook update and how that will effect what is posted and overall user engagement on Facebook. It'll also be interesting to see what kind of knock-on effect will happen with competing socials and Facebook's own Instagram.
We will certainly be watching!
